Damien Hirst - For the Love of God

The UK’s Telegraph has an excellent review and photo set of Damien Hirst’s diamond encrusted skull that went on display (and on sale for $98M) at White Cube Gallery earlier today in London. The exhibit officially opens on June 3rd. According to the article, “It is titled ‘For the Love of God,’ apparently the exclamation his mother gave upon hearing about the project.”

The skull, cast from a 35-year-old 18th century European male, is coated (inside and out) with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pink diamond in the center of its forehead. It was studded by a Bond Street jeweller with “the finest quality ethically-sourced brilliant-cut diamonds.” Hirst incurred costs upwards of $20M upon himself to create the piece.
